Human Trafficking

If you are upset by the Wayfair human trafficking issue, I would like to encourage you to be upset about human trafficking all the time. In the wake of accusations of such disgusting acts, be mad. Be mad that children are being exploited and abused across the globe. Be mad that women and men are being ripped from their families and forced to commit heinous acts. Be mad that human trafficking starts young. Be mad that there are people in the world who are caged, trapped, afraid, lost, and numb. Be mad about those things, but don’t only be mad when these realities have been thrust into the light. Human trafficking is not a new issue. Wayfair is not the first company to be accused of trapping, using, and abusing people. And, the ugly reality is that they will not be the last as long as there is a demand. Human trafficking is an act that harkens back to the beginnings of our country’s birth and before. It is not new. So, be mad. And, stay mad.

Give your money to local organizations that are helping victims within your own community because more than likely, women, men, and children are being enslaved in Your. Own. Back. Yard. [If you’re in Bremerton, Scarlet Road is an awesome organization!]

Give your time and lend your voice to those who cannot speak for themselves by raising money and awareness through fundraisers like Dressember. I am happy to dialogue more about this point in particular, so feel free to reach out with questions!

Give your prayers to leaders who don’t know how to attack this issue and need guidance.

Give your research to specific issues that you can speak up about and tell your friends!

Give your text messages or handwriting to your representatives and let them know this has to stop. Text “resist” to 50409 and Resistbot will connect you to your representatives. I’ve used this system - and it works!

What does not help enslaved people is creating a divide between political parties. Human trafficking is a bipartisan issue. Both sides of the aisle will need to act and respond in order to create more roadblocks for - and maybe even end - human trafficking. Allowing the Wayfair accusations to determine your feelings about media portrayal of Covid-19 numbers or wearing a mask, does not change the fact that people are really being affected by sex and forced labor trafficking. Use your hashtags #savethechildren, but do that and try to save the children! We have to be a united front in this, for the sake of humanity.

There are a lot of formerly quiet evils in our world that have recently been given the spotlight. And not everyone can be passionate about all of them. But, something we should all be passionate about is the value of a human life. Race, sex, identity, orientation, income, political view do not determine our worth. We are valuable because we have life. We are loved because we have life. Let’s use that life to love others. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him won’t perish, but have everlasting life.” He loved and gave. Let’s do the same.
